In January 2005 Jazz Loft Project director Sam Stephenson gave a presentation about the project at the Center for Jewish History on Thirteenth Street in Greenwich Village. The event was produced by Paul Weinstein, longtime producer of independent jazz programs in New York and a friend of the Jazz Loft Project. Pianist Dick Katz and bassist Bill Crow played at the event. Katz's son Jamie was in attendance and the next day he mentioned the project to WNYC’s Sara Fishko, who had been producing artful radio essays for WNYC under the title Fishko Files since 1999. Later that day Fishko met with Stephenson and Jazz Loft Project research associate Dan Partridge in a brownstone on Ninth Street and a long, fruitful, and fulfilling collaboration began.

The results are a ten-part series produced by WNYC and the Center for Documentary Studies, plus four anthology segments of one hour apiece. WNYC’s local broadcasts began on November 16, 2009. National Public Radio broadcast four parts on Weekend Edition begining December 6, 2009.  The four one-hour anthology broadcasts were in February 2010.
