Whose Nikon SP is that on the Cover of Highway 61 Revisited?

images

That’s the question posed by the wonderful photographer Edward Grazda in a comment yesterday on my post Which Direction Home, Pt. 1. In a follow-up email Ed told me that in Scorsese’s documentary, No Direction Home, Dylan could be spotted coming off a plane shooting with what looks like a Nikon SP. ¬†Wouldn’t it be funny if that was the camera stolen from Smith’s loft? ¬†Thus, the cover of the album is an inside joke between Dylan and Smith.

But I believe the camera is probably not Smith’s.

Does anybody know the story behind the “Highway 61 Revisited” cover and that camera?

(Which Direction Home, Pt. 2 here).

Thanks,

-Sam Stephenson

It’s not my camera, so you can cross me off the list.

Well, we know that the person holding the Nikon is Bob Neuwirth, so maybe that narrows it down…?

It’s Daniel Kramer’s spare Nikon. He handed it to Bob Neuwirth (Dylan’s road manager/ friend) to hold and fill the frame behind him. It was shot on some steps near Dylan’s New York apartment.

We know the photographer of the cover is Daniel Kramer. If he’s still alive , you could ask him. If he’s not , there are probably out-takes in his archives. Dylan was wearing the same multicoloured silk shirt in a London photo shoot/interview ( sitting on a park bench with Joan Baez May 1965). I have snaps from that session. + many more Dylan images/photos on my blog : > memoirsofadementedfan.blogspot.com <

    Hi Sam,

I’m sure that the man behind Dylan is Bob Neuwirth. So it’s possibly Neuwirth’s camera.

    Best regards, Stephan

Apparently the camera was owned by the guy who took the photo, Daniel Kramer, who lent it to dylan sidekick Bob Neuwirth for the shot.

Only someone who did NOT own a camera, or know anything about how to handle a camera, or someone being directed in a pose, would hold a camera that way.

If it was my camera, I would’ve screamed at someone holding it that way!

Reeves is correct. And dont we find it interesting that Dylans crotch made it onto an album cover in 1965? :-)

I have a better question. What is Dylan holding?

    Dylan is holding his sunglasses.

I recall reading that that camera was a German “Leica”. It was handed to Bob Neuwerth at the last moment and that the exposure was the last one left on a roll of film.
